Calling all the families, Murphy, Cannon, Duffy, Fogarty, Purcell, Murphy, O'Hanlon, McKay, Herlihy & Hegarty. You are all invited to the next Murphy family reunion. If you regularly read the Murphy blog you will know that Des & Sue have taken a step back from organising the reunions. Their experience & knowledge is second to none & they have agreed to help their apprentices! (did they really think we would let them off lightly haha). We have family members throwing their hats in with ideas & offers of help. This is great news. Des & Sue have been amazing over the years bringing our family closer together. It would be a crying shame to let all their had work fall by the wayside & not continue with the now tradition they began. Its up to us all to keep it going for years to come. OK gang come on lets all get into the spirit of it. How amazing to be part of a family such as ours. We may not see each other often but when we do its like we saw each other yesterday. Our children & children's children have formed friendships over the years .This alone is wonderful. The stories that have come out of previous reunions are amazing for eg 2 second generation cousins being at the same uni . After a casual conversation with each other re coming to Liverpool for a wkend found they where related & it was a reunion they where both coming home for.

We are hoping as many families as can will come & enjoy a fantastic weekend, great company, great venue, great food, great music (with surprising band members) great craic. Why not tie your weekend in with a trip down memory lane. See where our grandparents, parents ,yourselves once lived. Come & catch up with family you haven't seen for some time. We have an amazing wonderful city. Our city has always been open minded to change & development. If you have not visited Liverpool for some time you will be amazed at its beauty & splendour. We will be emailing /writing to those not using email to everyone in the next week or so with a full list of relevant info.

Clares & Clare Keep Family Reunion Going in 2013!

Clare Hegarty & Clare McKay , have ensured the survival of the Murphy Family Reunion by volunteering to take over its organisation in 2013. They felt holding it this year would be a bit rushed and decided on doing a proper job next year. Sue and Des Herlihy have also offered their support.
Clare Hegarty, who's the youngest of all the cousins, was understandably nervous at first with the magnitude of the task, but now is looking forward to it especially with her extended family's support. And well done to Clare McKay who is one generation down from the cousins, for taking on the job. Both uncle George McKay, and uncle Geroge Hegarty would have been proud of their daughters.

No I'm not joking! - but Stank is a tiny hamlet on the outskirts of Barrow in Furness. Stank Villa was a house Michael and James Murphy rented during Mick's time playing Rugby League for Barrow. Jim was lecturing at the local college. Paddy Murphy worked at Vicker's Shipyard during his summer break from university. Pictured next to Paddy is brother John, who'd just completed his O' Levels, and was taking a break visiting his brothers. The large guy at the back is former Barrow player, and team-mate of Mick, Steve Hogan. The other 2 on the outside are friends.

Leam Murphy and his team from Lantau Island, Hong Kong, achieved a creditable 3rd place in the Outriggers Competition held on Saturday 11 December 2011, at Sentosa Island, Singapore. Teams from around the world competed for this prestigious trophy, sponsored by San Miguel.

In recent months Leam has competed in Guam, and in the famous 'Around the Island of Hong Kong' Race.

Next summer the World Championship Outriggers Competition will be held in Hong Kong.

The charity event "Spice Roads Royal British Legion", held by the Royal British Legion (RBL) & Spice Roads Bike Club, embarked on an ambitious bicycle race of 855 KM from Bangkok to Phuket. The race began October the 21th and finished 28th October. It was to raise 500,000 bhat for both RBL and the Thai War Veterans Organisation. The team of 10 ranges in age from 64 year-old British ex-serviceman Tony Margetts to 17 year-old Thai Nattapongpan. The team have been in training for 9 months and are required to ride over 100km (62 miles) every day. John Cormac Murphy(Bob) who is a resident of Bangkok, is son of Cormac Murphy (well known curry & beer-taster), after completing the race, was heard to say, "Where's the bar?" He is seen 2nd from left on first picture, pink ribbons and having a drink in Phuket.

Congratulations to Cecilia Murphy (eldest daughter of Eamon & Penny) and James McNelly who were married on the 17th September 2011 at St. Etheldreda's RC Church in London. Eamon & Penny have now seen 2 of their five children married this year. Michael was married in February. The wonderful St. Etheldreda's, is the oldest Catholic Church in England and was a wonderful setting for the wedding, and the church choir were terrific. Following the marriage ceremony, the wedding party were ferried to the magnificient Skinner's Hall in 2 London buses! It was a wonderful evening, and after a great meal, entertaining and heartfelt speeches, we were treated to a professional Irish Dancing.

Many thanks to Eamon and Penny who made it a memorable day & night!

Proud parents Dan and Pat Murphy were overjoyed with the A-Level results achieved by son Sebastian. He gained an A in French, an A in German and an A* in Psychology. Seb is following in the footsteps of sisters Katie and Charlotte who also received great results several years ago, and who also excel at languages. Seb is hoping to go to Newcastle University. Frank & Pat Murphy's son, Anthony, secured his bride during a romantic holiday in Cuba with girlfriend Jackie. He popped the question, and the girl from Liverpool said yes!

Jackie Lawton is one of four and was born in Walton Hospital. Her family originated from Walton, and she now lives in Skem, where she met Anthony at nearby Ormskirk. Jackie is an accountant, and the pair of them have been courting for a few years - but she may correct me on my figures! The couple are shown in the above picture, soon after the proposal. Anthony is the one not wearing the dress!

Sarah Purcell is First Class!

Michael Purcell's daughter, Sarah, has just received a 1st Class Honours Degree (B.Sc.) in Geography from Kings College London. If that wasn't enough, Sarah also won the Tenants Prize for excellence in the field and John B Thornes medal awarded for the best performance in Physical Geography in the final year. Her dissertation has been nominated for the essay prize awarded from the Royal Geographic Society. John B Thorne's wife sent her a letter of congratulations.

This is a fantastic achievement for Sarah and all her family and extended family are over the moon with her dedication and fantastic effort. Her dad Michael is the youngest of Agnes Purcell's children (who we all knew as Aunty Aggie!) And Aunty Aggie would have been chuffed with her Granddaughter's brilliant achievement. Sarah is seen receiving her Bachelor of Science Certificate fromm the Chancellor of the University. Well done Sarah!

James Maurice Herlihy - Professional Boxer

I have written a Wikipedia article on my Uncle Jim Herlihy. He was a professional boxer. Paul and George McKay met him when my father married Lily. He kept a complete scrapbook of his career. The scrapbook has lots of programmes from Liverpool Stadium which are very rare. I am going to add to the article. Just Hoogle James MauriceHerlihy.

Here's the Wiki article so far:

James Maurice Herlihy was an Irish amateur boxer winning the Leinster 1938-39 Championships as a Middleweight. He went on to have a professional boxing career in England. He was born in Kilkenny, Ireland on 29 January 1914 and died in San Francisco Ca on 23 October 1962. Jim was the second child of Maurice O'Herlihy and Ellen O'Herlihy (nee O'Regan). His siblings were Lil, Patrick, Kathleen and Sheila. The family home was at 28 Wolfe Tone Street, Kilkenny. He went on to have a professional career in England and mostly in Liverpool. He boxed for Ireland in a tournament in Nottingham. Jim kept a record of his career made up of programmes and newspaper clippings. The programmes are very rare. He was a sparring partner of Bruce Woodcock, a British champion. Now for a Beatles connection. Pete Best, the first drummer of The Beatles, was the grandson of Johnny Best who was a Director of Liverpool Stadium. He arranged a fight for Jim at the Tower Blackpool in February 1943. Jim's fee was £20.

Just to update you on our wedding on 5th Feb 2011 on Waiheke Island off Auckland in New Zealand. It was a small wedding on a beautiful sunny warm February attended by all of Eamon's children and respective partners as well as Rebecca's Mum & Dad. Uncle Michael's Michael and Auntie Teresa's Johnny were able to attend the Wedding Mass and Reception. It was an utterly amazing day and we wished the whole Murphy Clan could have been with us on our special day. We will keep you updated with photos but here are two tasters!

Laura Doing Well After Operation

For those of you who are unaware, Mrs. Laura Murphy had a fall late last month and cracked her hip. The injury required an operation and insertion of a metal plate, which is quite traumatic for anyone, never mind a person who's 93 years young! My sister Rita tells us that she is making steady progress. Post-op is always a worry with the possibility of infection and pneumonia, but thank God she is in good hands and being moitored closely. She had the operation 30th January, just a week ago, and she is pictured here sitting up in bed.

Round Hong Kong Island Boat Race!

Well done to Leam Murphy for completing this "Iron-Man" Event boat-race on Sunday 21st November, 2010. The distance is 44km (nearly 30 miles), and the race is organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Each boat has 10 paddlers: 3 jump in the water and 3 others pull themselves into the boat at each of the 4 changes. Leam paddled in seat 1 for 2 legs in a row which was about 14kms. He can be seen in the photos, front of the boat at seat 1. For those of you who know Hong Kong, this leg of the race on the pictures, is from Causeway Bay going east then south towards Shek O and Big Wave Bay.

The RHKYC hosted a huge party and BBQ after the race. Battered and bruised, Leam was forced to work from home on Monday!

Patrick is son of Michael & Evelyn O'Hanlon. And of course the youth Michael is the youngest of Aunty Sadie and Uncle Paddy O'Hanlon's family.
The beautiful Niamh was born on the 7th November 2010 in Liverpool.

Graduate Frank's The Master!

Frank Murphy, eldest son of proud parents John and Joanne, graduated from Imperial College at the Royal Albert Hall on the 20th October 2010. Mum and dad are pictured with Frank above.

His qualification is a MSci (Master of Science) in Physics, which included a year in Europe. He received a First Class Honours.

Frank has received offers from Oxford and Cambridge Universities to begin a Ph.D (Philospoae Doctor), but has decided to remain at Imperial for the 3-year course as their program was more suitable.

What is the research topic for his Ph.D you may ask ??? I leave the explanation to Frank!

"The PhD is: 'Quantum optics and Negative refraction in Quantum metamaterials' or something along those lines. We're attempting to bend light the opposite way to which it does naturally which would allow the creation of 'superlenses' or even an invisibility cloaking device."

A bit like Leighton Baines bending his free-kicks around goalkeepers!!

The Van Bilderbeeks visit The Reagan Library

The Reagan Library is located in Simi Valley, California. Perched on a mountaintop with sweeping views of mountains, valleys, and the Pacific Ocean, this 100-acre site, 45 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, offers memorable experiences for people of all ages. Sue & Ben and daughter Brigitta visited the Library recently to listen to a lecture by Jon Voight. Jon is a friend of Sue's son Binky, and both are members of film society for movie industry people. The members include: Clint Eastwood, Tom Selleck, Gary Sinese of Forest gump (Lt Dan character), Kelsey Grammer and Robert Downey Jr are a few of the celebrity member's. Here are a few pictures taken by Binky, who told me: "Pretty amazing pictures of Reagan's Air Force One at the library. The actual plane inside an amazing hanger facing onto Simi valley. We all took a pretty intersting tour inside the plane itself. If you ever come to California again please try to make a trip to the Reagan library!!!"

Both are 2 years old now and love the movie "Finding Nemo". They also love swimming in the ocean, visiting the Aquarium and going to Mass with Daddy every Sunday. A mass rank of exceptional musicians from Liverpool and Ireland will unite on one stage to enjoy the musical connections between the city, the island it looks out to across the waves, and those who pass through Liverpool en route to, or from, Ireland.
This huge project not only brings together a wealth of music, talent and skills, but people too, musicians and audiences from both sides of the Irish Sea coming together to celebrate their shared roots and music.

August Trip To Walsingham - From John Murphy

These are photos from the week-long Walsingham conference which has been held every year since 1987 in the first week of August. Joanne & I and the kids started going in 1989 and have been 14 times. Since 2003 we've been helping out running the camp field for about 1000 of the pilgrims, the other 2000 or so stay in b&b. That's me next to our modest tent, the wider shot is Joanne walking up from the camp site for a break (we are typically on duty more than 12 hours a day). During those years Mum has been twice, Rita has been, Mary & Therese at least twice including 2009 (see picture), Mary's Laura Jane with her Dan, Therese's 3 children, Eugene's 2 girls. Our Mary has to be congratulated for camping last year for the first time ever at the age of 69! The conference takes place in giant marquees with up to 20 priests at a time concelebrating Mass. There is 24hr adoration of the blessed sacrament, continuous confessions, countless workshops, rosary groups and I'm not kidding a mass will typically go on for 2 hours including a 45min sermon and it's not boring! Walsingham as most of you know is the original Marion shrine dating from 1089 and was 1 of the 3 most important pilgrimage sites in Christendom up to the reformation.
Since 2002 we came every year with the Mizens. Jimmy Mizen loved coming every year and was eagerly looking forward to coming again in 2008 before tragedy struck. Jimmy's Mum Margaret is in the group photo (holding on to Joanne) taken last year when she came up to give a talk. Mary and Therese are in the photo as well as me, our Jack & Jim, and George Mizen kneeling down with his next door neighbour. The place where we are standing is the old Abbey grounds in the village where we celebrate an outdoor mass for about 2000 people. We symbolically walk through the great portal (which is still standing) and pray for reconciliation and the conversion of England (Mary's Dowry). If anyone can shine a light on what that means I would be grateful. My dream is to try and get all my brothers & sisters (and their spouses) to come for the week and as many of their children & grand children as possible. Catherine Hegarty was named Liverpool Daily Post Merseyside Woman of The Year. She has sent a message to the Blog to thank everyone who supported her.

"Thank you to all my lovely family & friends near & far. I am so overwhelmed. I can not believe I won Merseyside woman of the year. This means so much to me you would not believe. Thank you so very very much from the bottom of my heart. I feel like its happening to someone else & I am looking in on it. I am bursting with pride. I was thinking this morning after being with Murphy girlies summer soirée (Claire McKay Tague garden). Thank God Da came ere married Mary had the gang. The awards afternoon was amazing. Joe & my daughter Clare (my clare was soso proud she got very emotional as did a few others) lots of The Liverpool Signing Choir Staff came to support me. The room erupted when they announced the winner. I could not believe I was hearing my name. Thank you once again for all your votes .you must have been voting in your hundreds . I know family & their friends in America Newzealand , my beloved Liverpool & Mullaghbawn, Scotland, Wales, England & so many other places . How lucky am I that people believe in me. A million THANK U's from my heart. Just a final note to Joe, Clare, Elizabeth & Alexander who I love very much . THANK YOU for putting up with years of me devoting so many hours to the choir. I know they are very proud of me as so many people are. When I received the award & I saw my Clare crying I thought bk to Elizabeth graduating, Clare giving birth ,Alexander getting a place at uni & so many other times I have that sense of overwhelming pride I havel for them. I was blown away coz my children & Joe are feeling that way about me. As mums /partners/wives we don't expect that (well I don't ya just get on with things) Anyhooooo as usual I digress. I spoke to Cathy on Saturday morning and the Liverpool Echo had rang her the night before to ask to take her picture as she'd won the MBE. She thought they had the wrong person, as she had received no official letter of notification.

This is a great achievement for all her work with special needs children. Here are some extracts from the Echo:

Catherine Hegarty’s day job involves working with hearing impaired children at Knotty Ash primary school.
But after hours she runs the Liverpool Signing Choir, which has performed for the Queen during the Capital of Culture celebrations and at Wembley since she set it up a decade ago.
The mum-of-three and gran-of-two, who was appointed MBE for services to special needs education, said: “I cannot believe I got this award.
“I am honoured, but it is not just for me – there are a lot of people involved in running the choir and my colleagues at school.”
Catherine’s journey working with the deaf began when she started learning sign language 16 years ago as a way to progress in her job as a nursery nurse.
The 50-year-old said: “Since then, I have not looked back in working with the deaf.
“It is great to see hearing-impaired children included socially and I am looking forward to continuing with the work for many years to come.”

Cathy Hegarty has just found out someone has nominated her for 'Merseyside Woman of The Year'. She has no idea who nominated her, but I think we should all give her our support. She is currently in the final 25 out of 75 nominees. It goes to the public vote through the Liverpool Daily Post on June 2nd 2010. So make sure you get your vote in!

She is typically embarrassed by it all, but considers it a great honour.

The Daily Post launched its search for those women who deserve recognition for their achievements in a wide range of activities from business and commerce to charity work and entertainment. As we know Cathy has devoted many years of her time developing the Liverpool Signing Choir (see previous posting). The awards is now in its eighth year and firmly established in the region's calendar.

The weekend of Friday 23rd April 2010 saw 3 very secial Flynn Birthdays. Mary Flynn was 60, sorry 70! (would you believe it!) Youngest son Michael, was 40 and granddaughter Mary Jane, was 11 years of age. Congratulations to them all. A big thank you to Karen, Mick's wife for organising the do in Alsager - brillianttttt!

Cathy Hegarty was on BBC NW program Inside Out last night. The program describes the origins of The Liverpool Signing Choir and its founder, our very own Cathy.!

Michael Murphy's daughter Leoncia (aka Sasa) gave birth to a bouncing, rugby-playing boy, on October 21st. The young prop-forward, weighed in at 8lbs 4.5 ozs, and is seen here relaxing after a few pints of Old Gutwrench winter brew. Both mother and son are doing fine. Sasa has named her son Anastasio Benjamin Michael Frank Murphy, after his grandfather, great grandfather and great great granfathers!

Sasa tells me she is loving the sleepless nights as she can watch her boy laughing and gurgling to his heart's content. Now eight weeks old, the whole family are fascinated by the new addition, and are looking forward to his first Christmas. All his aunties are waiting in the wings until he fully "chubs up" so they can get to work tickling his tummy!

I hear Anastasio has made his first Christmas list for Santa, which includes a rugby ball, a gum-shield and an XXL jock-strap!

Fond Memories of Michael Cannon
While Michael’s funeral was a sad occasion, what came across from his sons and his brother Robbie was his great sense of humour. Austin told us a great story about his sister Kitty taking him communion. She went recently and gave him a wafer which was on the small side. He looked at it and said ‘What’s this? The credit crunch?’
Here is a picture of Michael visiting our parents in Manhattan in the early 50s. Da, Mikey and her sisters were very excited about Michael going to New York when he went to sea. His visit would be the first from any Murphy member to Lily since she had left Liverpool in 1947. So excited were they that they wanted to make it a surprise and not tell our parents before he arrived in New York. Aunt Kitty didn’t much like this idea so she wrote a letter telling them Michael was coming. She gave it to Aunt Rose to put in the mail. However, in order to maintain the surprise, Aunt Rose kept it until she was sure that Michael would arrive before the letter and it was only then that she sent it. My parents were very pleased to have him visit. My father took this picture and you can see how happy our mother is to be with her first nephew. Jimmy and Terry are the little dudes.
Timmy O’Hanlon told me that his father, Paddy, helped Michael get his first job. Michael told me that he did it for a while but that it was pretty gruelling. It was on a freighter which took cargo up to Scotland from Liverpool, loaded up with coal from Ayr and then went across to Ireland, unloaded and then loaded up with potatoes to return to Liverpool. He did a number of these trips.
We will miss him.

They have helped us immeasurably in coming to terms with our loss and ensured we pulled together to give our dad the best send off possible last Friday, which again we would like to thank everyone for attending. Dad always loved a good family get together, and I'm sure he would have been enjoying watching us all have a drink in honour of his life. Hello all, Thought I'd send some pics of our new little babe. His name is George James after his paternal Grandfather, on whose birthday he was also born! He was 2 weeks overdue in the end and weighed in at 8lb 10. He was also jaundiced at first so after a week of treatment we brought him home and he's now eating well and gaining weight and no longer bright yellow!. Raf and I wanted to thank you so much for all your kind messages, cards, gifts, flowers etc. really, you have spoiled us and I hope Georgie doesn't get used to it!! Sad News: Michael Cannon Passes Away.

I received the sad news from Gerard this morning.

Here are the messages that have since come in.

From his son Gerard:

Dad passed away peacefully in Clatterbridge Hospital on September 17 surrounded by loved ones. He was filled with love and pride for his entire family particularly his granchildren, sons, brothers and sisters and, of course, his mum, dad and aunty Kitty Burke .

He was able to retain his sense of humour and dignity until the very end. In fact, he was still making us laugh until practically the last moment, something that summed up his huge character and provided us with a cherished memory.

Although we have no dates as yet the service will be held in Saint Monica's Bootle followed by the burial at Ford cemetry. Finally, we will all get together at Bootle Cricket Club in Wadham Road to celebrate a great life.

Michael Cannon passed away very peacefully yesterday evening. Michael has been in ill health for some time and was admitted to Fazakerley hospital before being transferred to Clatterbridge just under three weeks ago. He left us at around 6.30pm and went very peacefully surrounded by his family and supported by their love and prayers. He was deeply grateful for the many prayers that were offered up on his behalf throughout his illness and the excellent care given to him by hospital/nursing staff over the years. Despite having a long battle with ill health Michael remained in good spirits, retaining his very dry sense of humour and keeping visitors entertained with his stories.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his sons Gerard, Austin, Francis, Martin and Michael and his nine grandchildren. Michael was the eldest son of Molly and Frank (RIP) and a much loved brother to Marie, Kitty, Robbie and our dear Francis (RIP). To the extended Murphy family Michael will also be fondly remembered as the oldest "Murphy" cousin, the first grandchild of Michael and Mary Murphy.

I will forward details of the funeral arrangements when available.

George McKay - May He Rest In Peace

Dear Family,
As many of you know by now, our dear cousin Geroge McKay passed away on Saturday morning 15th August 2009 at Broadgreen Hospital - God Rest His Soul.

The Funeral Requiem Mass will be held at St. Mark's R.C. Church, Halewood, Liverpool on this Thursday, 20th August 2009 at 12:00 midday, then afterwards at Springwood Crematorium. George requested Cremation and that his ashes should be scattered at St. Mary's Church, Mullaghbawn, in the County of Armagh, Ireland. Mullaghbawn was the birthplace of our Grandfather, Michael Murphy. His family will abide by his wishes
St. Mark's Church is where Frank Cannon had his Funeral Mass earlier this year.

Following the Cremation there will be a gathering at:

Hotels within walking distance of the Yacht Club: Jury's Inn, The Dolby & The Campanile. The Pineapple, is a little further out.

Catherine, daughter to Pattie and Kevin, sister of Maria and granddaughter of the late Sadie and Paddy O'Hanlon is in Liverpool Royal University Hospital, Ward 4A. Catherine sadly had to recently undergo a partial (below the knee) amputation. We all wish Catherine a speedy recovery and safe home. Three Christenings in One Go!

Chris & Ania Flynn's twin boys, Joseph Ronald & Ruben Anastasio will be Christened at Blairs Church (same as for wedding) on Saturday 25th July 2009 (time to be announced). Eugene and Janet Flynn's son Oscar Edward will also be Christened at the same ceremony.
It's that time of year again when I like to have my children baptised! Joseph Ronald and Ruben Anastasio.
This will be followed by the obligatory summer BBQ celebration at Chris & Ania's house, The Gables. Chris will provide the quality Riojas!!

On top of that, Chris & Ania will be saying good bye to blighty as we are escaping to Spain to live from 26th Aug.

Many thanks to all of you who came to the 4th Murphy Reunion Saturday 23 May 2009. It was a great night. Thank you all for your kind comments; they are very much appreciated. Eamon and John Murphy led a song session in the big space afterwards; it went long into the night. Sue and I rounded off the weekend on Monday night at a George Thorogood and the Destroyers concert at the Phil courtesy of Moira Hall (Hegarty): Grade A US rock and roll. Check out Bad to the Bone and Who do you love? on youtube. Just before he came on they played ‘Eve of Destruction’ by Barry McGuire. We had been singing this at Cormac’s instigation on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Thanks to Cathy Hegarty for the hospitality and the party at her house on Sunday. Lots of people came throughout the afternoon and evening and had a great time.

Thanks to John Daly for providing the champagne toast. I have been working on him to be a Liverpool fan and he tried out the joke (fact, actually) about the two football teams on Merseyside on Paul McKay with predictable results but you bluenoses will be delighted to hear that John Brennan gave him an Everton Cup Final scarf yesterday when Maureen and John took John and Becky to Speke Hall.

Another great evening was had by at all the 4th Murphy Family Reunion 23rd May 2009. A big thank you to Des and Sue Herlihy who organised the event. The food was great, the band and guest singers. Also it was great to see the photography gallery. As mentioned earlier, John Daly and wide Beth made it over from the States as well as Joe Acocella, Cecilia Murphy's eldest.

Twin Boys For Chris and Ania!

Chris Flynn and Ania have two more additions to their family making a total of 5 children. On Friday 22nd May 2009, Ania gave birth to twin boys: Joseph Ronald, 6lbs 7.5 oz and Ruben Anastasio, 5lb 13oz. Mum and boths are doing great, and I've been informed the twins started suckling immediately: just like dad with his beer!! Mary Pender's nephew John Daly has made the trip from the US to attend the Murphy Family Reunion. Sadly, Mary passed away not long ago. Mary was an integral link with the Murphys and Penders and spent part of her childhood at Mullaghbawn. (see previous Blog Post). John will no doubt have stories to tell and please make him and his wife feel as welcome as possible. They arrived today and are staying in the Adelphi.
Let's hope the weekend is a great one and special thanks to Des and Sue for all their efforts.

Sad News: Francis Cannon Passes Away

I was informed by Gerard Cannon this evening that his uncle Francis passed away yesterday. Here is is full message:

Hello Cormac,
I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news , however, Francis Cannon died yesterday evening. As you know he’d been diagnosed with cancer a year or so ago and he’d been vigorously fighting the disease throughout that time. Sadly, he unexpectedly took a very bad turn on Sunday and was rushed to Whiston A&E . He was admitted onto a ward and was really well looked after by hospital staff, however, he left us at 8:30 or so yesterday evening.
Throughout his short stay in hospital he was surrounded by loved ones and was supported by their love and the many prayers that were offered up on his behalf.
It would be great if you would mention his passing on the Murphy blog (perhaps somebody has already spoken to you in any event) and ask the family if they could think of Agnes, their children Sarah, Andrew, Emma and Josef and their ten grandchildren. Not forgetting my dad, Marie, Kitty and Robbie.
My dad is still in poor health and is deteriorating, however, he is in very good spirits ( I had a good old gab with him yesterday evening when Kitty and I had a break from hospital).Rhodri and I went to the match on Sunday , we met up with Robbie, Irene and Paul and bumped into Paul and Ian McKay in the street near the ground, and so I was able to give my dad some footie stories which he enjoyed

Anyway will sign off if you want I’ll keep you updated with events, such as the funeral details.

Congratulations to The Irish Rugby Team for winning the Grand Slam after 61 years! But could they have done it without the support of the Murphy Family? I don't think so! 5 Murphy brothers and 4 nephews made the journey to Dublin for the Ireland v. England game on the 28th February 2009. The gang travelled from as far as Hong Kong, Scotland and England for the match. Catherine Hegarty launches the Liverpool Signing Choir at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral 18/2/09

Our Cathy made the whole family very proud when she officially launched her Liverpool Signing Choir . I front of over 200 guests we were treated to a very moving night of entertainment from 70 youngsters from across the city.
The story begins 7 years ago in her school, Knotty Ash Primary (literally 100 mts from Ken Dodd’s family home) , when she was working with children in the school’s deaf unit. She want ed to create something that all the children at school could be included and that would break down the barriers between the deaf and the hearing community. With no musical training she started the choir which some children sang and those that had difficulty could sign.
Her journey since has taken the choir to the stage at the Liverpool Philharmonic and a regular Christmas “gig” at Harrods in London where she is on first name terms with Big Mo’ !
Following this launch, she has bookings for Wembley, Anfield .........where next!
I was particularly proud as Cathy chose to use a self penned song I wrote 25yrs ago. (Livepool Childhood) and one which has become a particular favourite in my bathroom!

New York Archives! Des Herlihy's Christening

Last weekend one of my cousins from New Jersey, John Goodheart, visited me and gave me a dvd. My father's side were from Kilkenny but before this they all came from a farm in Graigue Upper in the parish of Doneraile, Co. Cork. This side were O'Regan and Linehan. He had an Aunt Margaret from this branch who lived in Manhattan. This lady had a daughter, also called Margaret who had two girls, Ann and Peggy. When my parents went to New York after the war, they became good friends with Peggy and Ann. I have attached some clips of my parents at Ann's wedding and one of my mother on her own is when she is behind the Bridesmaid, Ann's sister, Peggy. Peggy is John Goodheart's Mother. The longer clip is film of my Christening. You will see me, Jimmy and Terry. The lady in red is my mother, the man in the bowtie is my father and the man in the beige suit is his brother Jim. At the start you see my mother with me and as the camera moves across to the door of the Church the next two gentlemen are Paddy and Jim. The lady in the blue coat is Peggy, my Godmother.Terry, Jimmy and I were baptised at St. Albert's Church at 427 W. 47 Street between 9th and 10th Avenue. We lived in an apartment directly opposite at 428 W. 47 Street. The Church was demolished some time ago. St. Albert's was a Belgian Church and my brother Jim tells the story that this was the Church which King Leopold of Belgium visited when he came to New York. Michael Cannon visited us here on one of his trips to New York when he was working as a sailor. His ship had docked on the Hudson River and he just walked up a few blocks to our apartment. We moved to Jamaica, Queens in 1954 and it was here that several more Cannons, O'Hanlons and Fogartys came to visit us.I spent a week last May in Manhattan retracing our history in Manhattan. I found the hospital we were born in, St. Claire's on W 52nd and 9th Ave. and some places where my father had worked. Two fun details about W. 47th Street. A few doors down from our apartment is a plaque on a wall marking the house where the publisher of the New Yorker magazine lived. He had a housewarming party when he moved in and one of the guests was Harpo Marx of the Marx Brothers who were big favourites in our house. On W. 47th between 8th and 9th Avenue is a synagogue which was known as the Actor's Temple. Illustrious entertainers such as Jack Benny and Ethel Merman among others worshipped here but what I like most (and our brother Patrick will be delighted to read) is that a Stooge or two of the Three Stooges also worshipped here. The building's theatrical heritage has been retained; it is now a theatre.

Elite and Community Handball Development

Michael Hegarty is a former GB International for Handball and now works as a Development Officer in the North West of England for the English Handball Association. This is a simplified description of Michael's version of what he does!

He has been very effective in a short period of time in building the sport in the Warrington area. The aim of Michael's work is to develop handball at grassroots level but also to feed into the elite National and Olympic squads.

Myself and some colleagues from Sports Development in Oldham had a very good meeting with Michael at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington an the 12th of March. We are trying to broaden sporting opportunities for young people in Oldham and handball is a great addition to the existing programmes. Michael spoke with a lot of knowledge and experience and gave us some great advice. He will be coming over to Oldham to lead a training session in May.

We held the meeting in a box overlooking the pitch which was brilliant. We both went into Teaching in the 70s and I thought a picture of two Murphy cousins who go way back before that even, would be a fun memento of this occasion in 2009.

Trial of Jimmy Mizen's Killer Starts Today

Today is the first day of the trial of Jimmy Mizen's killer. The jury is chosen today. A small group of us met with Barry and Margaret (Jimmy's Mum and Dad) last night and they emphasised that they are not looking for revenge but justice. Young Jimmy was as good as everyone says he was and you all would have been proud to have him as a son. Joanne and I were lucky enough to experience that first hand on the many little holidays we had together and of course at all the Walsingham conferences. Our Sam and Jim were very close to Jimmy from when Jimmy was 5 or 6 years old. Our Frank and Jack are mates with two of the older brothers Harry and Tommy who will be key witnesses in the trial. Harry was in the shop when Jimmy was attacked and Tommy held him as he died. Barry and Margaret are determined that something good will come out of this. So far money has been raised for two brand new mini-buses for the scout group Jimmy belonged to. Also two apprenticeships have been established by Southwark Council in Jimmy's name as a result of a two week work experience he did 2007. The organisation had never had an apprentice before but they were so impressed with Jimmy they offered him one to start in June 2008 but of course he never made it. Barry and Margaret, however, feel that something else will come out of it on a spiritual level. I just spent the weekend away with Barry and a bunch of other Dads doing Fathers Prayers. We meet regularly and pray for our children. Joanne runs the Mothers Prayer group at our church doing the same thing. Together with Children of Faith the three parts belong to the Solace Community in Kent (details below). Keep the Mizens in your prayers over the next 3 or 4 weeks that they will continue to be strong in their faith.LoveJohnx

Don't forget the family reunion on Saturday 23rd May 2009 at the Adelphi. Des and Sue have sent out the details. Please try and get your cheques to them as soon as possible.
If you need accommodation at the Adelphi, don't forget to quote the reference number Des has given you. Rooms (twin or double) work out at £90 per night - so you're paying £45 per person per night.
I've looked at other Liverpool hotels for this Bank Holiday weekend, and they are dearer than what I've quoted. Don't leave it until the last minute and be disappointed.
Also there is the Mass at 6:30pm prior to the party. Bring any photos for the display - and any pictures of Uncle Paddy O'Hanlon would be appreciated for Michael and Evelyn.

Calling all Murphys!

You may already have heard that the 4th Murphy Reunion is booked for Saturday 23rd May at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. We are doing our best to send this to people we have contact details for, but we can’t get in touch with everyone who might want to attend, so we need your help to spread the word. So far we have booked the suite to the left of the grand foyer, the disco, the band, and buffet. If any of our talented family would like to perform along with the band let us know – they will work something out with you, even if you just let us know on the night.

You may like to attend the 6.30 Mass at the Cathedral, before making your way to the party, which will start from 7.30 onwards, until late. We will have display boards where we can share the ever expanding photo exhibition and other memorabilia. The cost will be £20 per adult, £10 for youngsters 5-15, under 5’s free. SPUC Silent Witness Protest at Loughborough

Members of of SPUC - Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child gathered today on a very cold Saturday morning near Loughborough University. The huddle picture shows teachers Mick Murphy(flat cap) and wife Anne (light pink hat & scarf). Both are life-long campaigners for Pro-Life. Mick is a native of Armagh and friend of Cormac Murphy, who is pictured to his left. To Cormac's left is Dr. David Drott, originally from Minnesota, but now domiciled in Loughborough. Fellow Pro-Life campaingnersDavid and Cormac are former lecturers at Loughborough University.

It was a very good turn-out despite the cold weather, and over the 2 hours, particpants numbered almost 100.

An acclaimed author and former pupil of St Marys College in Crosby has returned to the school to talk to sixth formers about his latest book.
James Murphy spoke to history students about Liverpool VCs which focuses on the 23 Liverpudlians who received the Victoria Cross for gallantry in various actions from the Crimean War to World War One.

The visit was arranged by teacher Tom White, a friend of Mr Murphy, to link into events at the school to mark Remembrance Day.Liverpool VCs, which has a foreword by Lord Derby, tells how some men find extra reserves of strength and courage to renew the challenge and go forward to offer their own lives so that others might live.It includes some remarkable stories of individual bravery, but the authoralso makes the point that it was not uncommon for such heroes to end their lives as paupers back in Liverpool.The book has been widely praised, with one critic describing it as excellent and saying that James Murphy writes with verve and sympathy, as well as the authority you would expect from an academic.Mr Murphy, who was brought up in Bootle and now lives in Barrow-in-Furness, was one of 15 children born to his late father Michael, whose family was from Ireland, and his 91-year-old mother Laura who is of Spanish descent.His previous books include a trilogy of anti-war spy thrillers and a re-examination of Liverpools famous - and unsolved - 1930s Julia Wallace murder case. He is currently working on a history of the Mersey Tunnel.St Marys College spokesman, Dr Trevor Lane, said: We were very pleased to welcome James Murphy back to the school for what was a very timely visit. The students really enjoyed his talk on a fascinating subject.

On the 17th November Danny and Pat Murphy's second daughter Charlotte reaches the grand old of of 21. We all wish her a Happy Birthday! From mum, dad, sister Kate and brother Sebastian all her many cousins, aunts, uncles, friends grand parents and great grand parents!!!

Pat Murphy, son of Patrick and Audrey is currently serving in Afghanistan with the British Army. He is seen here in uniform and battle fatigues and also between his proud mum and dad.
