John Campbell of Mullagbawn Passes Away
Dan McKay has sent me the news that John Campbell, the well-known story-teller has died at the age of 73 following his battle with leukaemia. He'd recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife Ethne. I visited his house several times with my brother Jim. He was of course brother to Petesy Campbell - who sang many a song in O'Hanlon's pub, and is well remembered by the family. John himself famously recorded "Boys of Mullaghbawn" and gave me a copy of the tape. He was a very kind and gentle man, whose loving wife Ethne was battleing with cancer in the late nineties. He told me his grandfather was child during the famine and described the horrors of that time - amazing how we connect history. He died on October 2nd - tha same date as my father. Dan has forwarded his obituary from the Guardian: Guardian Obituary
May He Rest In Peace.
