Laura's 19th Great Granchild!

Here is Laura Murphy's 19th great-grandchild (if she keeps having any more, we'll have to put her on the pill!) His name is Daniel and was born to proud mum Victoria on the 23rd April 2006. Victoria is daughter of Frank and Pat Murphy, and husband to Anthony Thomas. Proud grandfather Frank is shown holding Daniel just 2 weeks ago. Frank tells me he is a pleasant lad, and always gets his round in! Christening to be announced.

Holy Trinity Church Cork

Cork's Capuchin community(click link below), of which Fr Mathew was a member, was originally located at Blackmoor Lane, where their first chapel was built. When that became inadequate for their needs, Fr Mathew selected a site on Charlotte Quay (now Fr Mathew Quay) for a new church and friary. The foundation stone of Holy Trinity Church was laid on 10 Oct 1832. Work on the George Richard Pain's designed building was hampered by site difficulties and lack of funds. The unfinished church was consecrated on 10 Oct 1850, Fr Mathew's birthday.A friary designed by Robert Walker, was built beside the church in the late 1880's.In 1890, the centenary of Fr Mathew's birth, a competition was announced for the completion of the church. Dominic Coakley's successful design reduced the scale of G.R.Pain's original plan; the spire and facade were added in 1891. The church contains a beautiful stained glass memorial window "to the memory of Daniel O'Connell, the Liberator of his fellow catholics from the inflictions of the penal code". A replica of the Crucifix of San Damiano - "the Crucifix that spoke to St Francis of Assisi" is also contained here.

The Murder of Julia Wallace by James Murphy

"In January 1931, Julia Wallace was found brutally murdered in the front parlour of her terraced home in the Anfield suburb of Liverpool. Her husband, William, was found guilty of wilful murder and sentenced to death by hanging. However, the verdict was overturned by the Court of Appeal and he was released. The police sought no one else in connection with the death of Julia Wallace, and after William died three years later, the file was consigned to the archives.
The Wallace Case, as it is known, is unique: it is the only not proven murder case in English legal history. Not only is it an unsolved murder, it is a perfect murder, the 'nonpareil of all murder mysteries'. Rarely a year goes by without a contribution being made to the voluminous literature on the case. The question remains, did William Wallace murder his wife on the night of Tuesday 20 January 1931? If he did not, then who did? "
The book was published in 2001 by Bluecoat Press, Liverpool and printed by Cromwell Press, Trowbridge, Wiltshire. This was Jim's first factual book after he'd written the action/spy thriller triology, Cedar, Juniper and Ash.
Jim has returned to fiction, and is currently adding the finishing touches to his current novel - a murder mystery based in Liverpool --- watch this space. Jim is based in Barrow and has four children: Christopher, Liz, Sophie and Mary. Mary is mum to his granddaughter, Molly. Jim works as a Mud Engineer Analyst Manager on Middle East Oi/gasl rigs.

Aunty Aggie in 1999

Here is a picture I found from Michael Purcell. It is of Aunty Aggie with Michael, and Michael's children, James and Sarah. It was September 1999. And doesn't Aunty Aggie look well? She retained her wonderful looks and spirit right to the end. God Bless her. James and Sarah have changed slightly since then!! I met them at the reunion in May and they got me very, very, very drunk! (only kidding - it was totally self-inflicted!)
July 8th Feast Days for the following Saints (and if Blessed Peter at the end of the list wasn't such a hermit, he may have been canonised by now!) - click on names for history:

At last! On the Google Search Engine!

Our blog site is now being picked up by the www.Google.com search. If you put in +murphy +mullaghbawn +liverpool it actually shows first on its search list. It takes a while for these search engines to include new sites in their index. I can't find it through www.yahoo.com yet, but the main one is Google. So hopefully it will get a lot more hits now!

Another Mullaghbawn Blog Site

Found this site on Bernard Keenan of Mullaghbawn who went to the States during the famine. Very interesting
http://keenancousins.blogspot.com/
Some very good comments and lots of mentions of McKeowns. Were we related to the McKeowns?

"Deceit and Dirty Money" a novel by Jim Herlihy.

San Francisco is the setting for this fast-paced psycho thriller. Young Chris Callen's ambition ensnares him in a drug laundering scheme engineered by Bill Stafford the City's leading entrepreneur. When Callen strikes back, Stafford hires a Mexican hitman triggering a tsunami of violence on the streets of San Francisco.

Jim is the eldest of Aunty Lily & Uncle Paddy's 5 children and is based in San Franscisco working for the Citigroup Corporation.
When he was in Latin America, he used to write for "The Times", "The Economist" and did a couple of assignments for the BBC, he then turned his hand to fiction. "Deceit and Dirty Money" was published late 2000 and if you go to Amazon.com, you'll find it there. You may come across another Jim Hertlihy who writes about the Irish police, but that's not our Jim. He sold the audio rights to a BBC producer called Alec Reid and he recorded it as an audio book. The narrator makes it come alive and it is 12 hours in total as a recording. You can download it from www.Audiobooksforfree.com. The title was shortened to 'Dirty Money'. For $15 you can download an excellent quality audio version versus the free one which is OK. His second novel has been stalled for several years due to the pressures of family, work and life, but he is in the process of resurrecting it, with a possible rewrite and introducing a biotech thriller twist.
God Luck Jim! We look forward to its publication.

Development of the Site

Thanks for all those who have left comments. Never be afraid to leave a comment - you can even remain anonymous. Also, you can leave a comment for an an old item. Please pass the the link http://mullaghbawntoliverpool.blogspot.com/ to the site to all your family, relatives and any friends you think may be interested. There is a great one left in the first posting by Beverley Murphy, granddaughter of Auntie Susie - she is now living in Toronto.
I welcome any item of news of family includIng:
- sporting achievements (send me details, up and coming events etc.)
- musical - are you in a band? have you gigs coming up? tell me about it!
- Irish Dancing? I would like features on this - it is an art form that should be preserved.
- literary and art interests? - authors, poets, artists - send me your details and I will publish!
- business links - if you want me to advertise your business, I will put your link on the site!
- starting a business? I can advertise on this site for free!
- buy and sell? if there is enough interest, we can start it up.
- looking for a job? tell us about it - some of us out there may be able to help.
- if you would like me to publish features of your family (including spouses) send them to me.

We must never forget the nine sisters and one brother were all married, and their spouses were an integral part of all our lives, so, if requested, they will all feature at some time or another. Likewise, children, grandchildren who marry, we want to hear about your sposes also (if you so desire).

This is all about networking and connecting. We have an amazing mixture of talented people within the family and we can share these talents both from an entertainment point of view, and from a working and business perspective. If you are starting a web-site - be sure to add links to other family web-sites. This helps the search-engines establish your domain. With such a large growing family, and the next generation having children and grandchildren, we can all help to get the younger ones a start in life. We can offer advice through the postings and comments of the site.
I would like to see where everyone goes to college and university. It is often been the case where we have cousins at the same college, and they were never aware of it. Aunties and uncles may live nearby, and it is reassuring for the new students to have that reassurance of family nearby, when they're living away from home for the first time.

Please let me know if you have other suggestions - I will welcome them all.

July 1st 2006 - England out of the World Cup!

Liverpool put England out of the World Cup - Gerrard and Carragher missing the penalties. Still, we can support Portugal now, as Everton player Nuno Valente carries the blue flag! I hear Valente has Irish roots, the spelling of his name was Nun O'Valente!!

"The Boys of Mullaghbawn"

This is an old traditional South Armagh song and concerns treachery, treason and deportation. Squire Jackson who is meantioned in the verses, was indeed an English Squire in the region back in the 18th century and as the song describes, a very fair man. I believe "The cuckoo left her station" refers to the traitor. The ruins of Jackson's house are still visible outside the village of Mullaghbawn.
Many of the family will be familiar with the line: "Farewell Killeavy and the Boys of Mullaghbawn." I first heard it when my father would give a lift toTed McGuinness, an old Irish friend of his, from Quinn's in town after a Saturday afternoon drink. While he was getting out of the Bedord van at Aspinwall Street , he would quote the line. This must have been 1950's. I never realised it was a song. Ted's line is from a mixture from 2 verses:

On a Monday morning early my wandering steps they'd lead me
Down by a farmer's station, through meadows and green lawn
I heard great lamentation, the small birds they were warbling
We'll have no more engagements with the boys of Mullaghbawn

As our heroes crossed the ocean I'm told the ship in motion
Did stand in great commotion as if the seas ran dry
With the trout and salmon gaping the cuckoo's left her station
Farewell to old Killeavey and the hills of Mullaghbawn

The are many versions of the lyrics and indeed the song. If you remember Petesy Campbell - he died Jan. 2003, his brother John recorded it. John is world renowned shanachie (story-teller) and lives just up the road from O'Hanlon's pub. More information of John and Len Graham at http://www.storyandsong.com/cds.htm . I have also heard Brian "Nelly" Murphy give an excellent rendition of the song in O'Hanlon's.
At this site http://www.chivalry.com/cantaria/lyrics/boys-mullaghbawn.html you can hear 2 versions by Mary Smith and Aidan Brennan. For those musicians among you, there is a GIF file of the sheet music - so we want a rendition for the next reunion in 2009 - you will have plenty of time to practice!
Other useful links on the site includea South Armagh tourist guide.
Bernie O'Hanlon, owner of the pub, has a web site: http://www.ohanlons.com/index.htm
His pub is shown, and inside the pub, a 1995 photo of Ronnie Flynn on the left and Petesey and his wife(originally from Bootle). Sadly all three of them are no longer with us.

Do anyone of have any recollection of Ted McGuinness?
